Day 2: A day for art and drinking. On the second day, we completed the other half of Central Park. A walk through nature is a pretty great way to start the day. We ended up walking around the reservoir on our way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET). This was the main place I wanted to visit. First of all, like many things in NY, it is HUMONGOUS. I don't think we saw all of it and we spent several hours there... it was almost overwhelming. I'm sharing pictures of two things that were my "favourites". It was beautiful beyond description. That night I went out for a drink by myself as my friend was trying to find guys to hook up with and was admittedly getting on my nerves a bit. It was nice being out by myself even though I didn't venture too far and literally only had one drink. I just sat and people watched and journaled. That's not creepy, right? "The fluid arc of her body projects a self assured euphoria..." Day 3: Walking, exploring, and ghosts... oh my. My friend was rather grumpy and down today so the day started off very slowly. We ended up going to the Lego Store which proved to be nearly enough fun to cheer my friend up; we checked out a Flee Market, Wall Street, and the New York Public Library. It was a lot of fun, I didn't enjoy the library as much as I thought I would; it was ironically a bit too touristy for me and we didn't even get to see any books . It was a bit of a quick in and out. That night I went on a Ghosts of New York nighttime walking tour. It was one of my favourite activities; I originally signed up for it by myself and then my friends dad was interested so he came along with me. The tour was very informative and interesting- not as scary as I would have liked- but the best part was finally getting to observe some of the nightlife in NY. It was a Saturday night walking through Greenwich Village, it felt like there was a party, dancing, music, excitement... on every corner. I do have some minor regrets that I didn't drop off my friends dad at the hotel and then go back out and enjoy it. Day 4: I put my lightsaber in Brooklyn. We went to Brooklyn today. I liked it there, we stopped in a few independently owned craft/jewellery type of shops. I bought little note cards that said "frm brklyn" with a really cute design on it. I took some pictures of really innocent signs that I just made dirty because I could. We stopped at a very large cemetery on our way back to Manhattan. It was incredibly well kept and very beautiful. It was a Sunday, which happened to be Mother's Day and there were a lot of very beautiful tributes for Mothers who had passed. I know it's public property but I do feel like it is intrusive to visit cemetery's for purposes other than celebrating/grieving a loved one so I just kind of hung out near the entrance while my friend toured around. I did manage to get a pretty picture of the Manhattan skyline while I was there though. Day 5: My last full day in NYC. My friend and his parents arrived a day before I did and they visited the Empire State Building that day. So on the 5th day, they went to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I very gratefully took the opportunity to go touring a bit on my own. I took myself to a nice breakfast and started off at the Empire State Building. It is a self-paced tour and I took my sweet time; it was very well developed and quite fascinating actually. I was glad to have gotten an early start because as I was finishing up my tour it was getting progressively more crowded and on my way out I noticed that a line was developing. I walked around aimlessly just trying to take in the atmosphere and did a little bit of shopping. I went back to the hotel earlier than I would have because I thought I had a bit of a date lined up. He cancelled on me but as you might recall, I did find someone else so it worked out quite well . It was probably the best way that I could have spent my last night in NY. Day 6: Goodbye NYC The final morning was bittersweet. I didn't want to leave NY. I didn't want to go back to work. But I was missing my bed. And real food that didn't cost me an arm, a leg, and my first 3 children. The flights were full but obviously went fine. I felt like I finally learned the true meaning of a "New York minute". Manhattan really is a walking city. Some of my expectations were fulfilled: people in suits were running (literally running) around nearly everywhere and ducking into bars after work hours, there are a lot of brick apartment buildings with fire escapes snaking up the faces and sides, the insides of buildings are tiny, the people are rather brusque (but not necessarily unfriendly), it is EXPENSIVE. I was also rather surprised: there is a lot of culture, art, and diversity, the people actually seemed genuinely happy and content. It's almost like everyone (okay, probably a bit of a generalization) feels like they have a purpose that they are striving towards. People there seemed so confident and unapologetic. I loved that. Even though I saw a lot of really great attractions, I have to say that what I enjoyed most was walking through the city and riding the subway. I know, I'm a bizarre oddball. I saw this Mya Angelou poem on the subway; this is my favourite photo from my trip. Apologies for my lack of pictures toward the end of my trip. Like I said, I'm not the picture taking kind of person. I do have some pics but they aren't that great. If I choose to share them I will likely update this blog. Thanks for reading through . Things I would do differently next time: -Go out at night more and experience the nightlife… I really feel like I missed out there and wish I would have been brave enough to explore it by myself more -Check out some of the smaller museums -Do more research on festivals going on in the city -Spend less on food and more on shopping -See Jimmy Fallon! | " >||||||
