how could I miss this?! tongue

My all time fav is Phil Rudd: yes, he plays 4/4; yes, he's never been eclectic. But try to play with THAT groove, intensity and precision and you'll soon know that "simple" is very different from "easy"!

Other I really look up to are Ian Paice, Barriemore Barlow, Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, Mikkey Dee, Jorg Michael, Uli Kusch and many many others.

In no particular order:

Dallas 'Digger' Royall (Rose Tattoo)
Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy)
Bill Ward (Black Sabbath)
Dave Abbruzzese (Pearl Jam)
Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave)

A lot of the above weren't necessarily technical wizzes, but play/played with a lot of feel.

Honorable mention:

Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones -- he more-or-less invented the rock drum riff)
Alex Van Halen
Keith Moon
Joey Jordison (Slipknot)
Craig Rosvear, Brad Heaney (Screaming Jets)
Matt Cameron (Soundgarden)
Mitch Mitchell

Nice list indeed. All of them gave something great to music. I maybe would have left Hunting out (sorry Tom!) and mentioned someone like Mikkey Dee.

Yes, two in my list are from the same band, but for different reasons - one for his unique style, one for the unity he brought to the band.

No5 I'll have to think about, tempting to go for either Ringo Star or Tommy Ramone, both for the same reason - they played for the song.
