Firearms
With almost 5000 hits and 457 posts in the thread about guns in the GD section and the obvious fact that a lot of NN members own and use firearms, I thought it would be interesting to have a Firearms thread under Hobbies.

My intent was not to to debate the right or wrong of firearm ownership under this topic as that seems better in the original thread in GD or even in the politics section.

Hopefully we will be able to discuss various types of rifles, shotguns, handguns and even black powder or antique weapons.

I know it is a stretch to think this goes smoothly without turning into a political free for all. However if you consider that there are a lot of members on here who have a great deal of knowledge to share about the subject, you can understand my motive.

Excellent idea 2dapoint. thumbup thumbup thumbup

What is everyone's opinion on this?

Anyone ever tried it, and if so did it improve the accuracy of the rifle?

That is mega high tech for me, DC. I spent an hour this afternoon with an old S&W, wire brush, shortened cleaning rod, drill and #9 trying to remove years of residue that the previous owner never bothered to clean out.

I found your article interesting and am trying to figure out how to show it to some friends without having to tell them to go to a porno site to see it unsure

Was amazing how the already clean weapon came up with so much debris.

Thanks for a good article.

I am not a reloader, but found this interesting in the April issue of Shooting Times.

There is a product called "Glow Ammo" that is sold as a civilian version of tracers.

They consist of stickers you stick on the back of the projectile when handloading. They are not a fire hazard and can only be seen from behind the firing point as the round goes downrange.

MSRP is $49.95 for 250 individual stickers packaged 50 to a sheet in 9mm, .38spl, .40 and .45.

The author did a series of tests and determined the attachment of the stickers did not influence the ballistics of his reloads.

I would guess it's best value is as a training aid. But would be fun to try out just for shits & giggles too.

How long will primers last? What`s the shelf life. Don`t laugh but I`ve got around 10,000 of them for various calibers. I used to reload (novice more or less), still have a RCBS but haven`t bothered making ammo in quite some time.

Got so many primers cause there was this thing going around that they were going to be banned. rolleyes Good grief.............please don`t say it. grin

I'm not a reloader, but to the best of my knowledge they should have a very long shelf life if kept dry. I know I've fired ammo that was twenty years old without incident of failure.

BTW, if you have any 209 primers you might be able to sell them to black powder hunters. Most of the newer black powder hunting rifles use the 209 shotgun primer instead of the #11 cap.

They have been kept dry and in ammo boxes. Well...............I`m going to have to go through them and see what I want to sell. I may keep ones that I may decide to use again. I have reloaded for my .357 before and may decide to reload for my .45 if I ever get out and shoot the freaking thing. I`ve also got .30 caliber stuff and God only knows what else.

The thing of it is I just don`t go out that much anymore and I can`t have the shit just sit around.......but then again I may decide to again. I never can make my mind up about anything. I think I may have ADHD. rolleyes

Primers
I would think if stored right and kept dry they should last indefinitely.

Years ago we got a conex container filled with WWII shotgun shell. These old boxes of green cardboard 12ga shells all fired. There were no misfires. I still have a box or two but would not shoot them as now even ammo has collector value.

The primers in the shells were at least 40 years old when we fired hundreds of them.

Well that`s good to know. Yeah I suppose as long as they are stored properly there may not be a problem. Is till have got to get rid of a lot of stuff cause I`m never gonna use it. As far as collector ammo goes I`ve got 3 boxes of Winchester Black Talons.

Forreal...

Talons are excellent home/personal defense rounds. What I like best about them is that they very rarely, even when fired at near point blank ranges, carry through the "target".

In other words, you don't have to worry about killing the dirtbag and someone standing behind him. Provided you can hit what you aim at that is. tongue rolleyes

wink

BTW, while the "Black Talon" is no longer manufactured, and therefore those boxes have a value as collector items, you can get the same round still, just under a new name.

Ranger Talons are the "law enforcement only" version of the same round just without the black coating.

I think they were also sold/currently are sold under the name "Failsafe" or SXT one of the other. Been a while since I bought any since I have a *ahem* adequate supply on hand at the moment. tongue

BTW, "SXT" stands for "Same eXact Thing" or the Black Talon under a new name. laugh thumbup

Interesting account DC.

I have the same *ahem* supply as you as well as an *ahem* supply of Silver Tips all in
.45 ACP. I only shoot defense ammo to make sure it operates whatever weapon it will be loaded into so the above supply should last forever. My usual range ammo is Wal-Mart whatever is cheap and not steel.

As I understand it the coating was the problem with the Black Talon.

I am always interested in seeing the prices the BT gets at shows, but would probably never bother selling what I have.

I always used CCI Blazers for defense rounds but I can't find any stores that stock them any more. I found some at the last gun show but they were either 9mm, .45 ACP or .357 mag...not the first box of .40 S&W crying

Guns I have coming out of my ears - Winchester 73, four 92s, two 1890s, Whitney Kennedy, Sharps, Spencer, Colt 1851, Several Admas and Tranters, Several Martini Henry rifles, two Sniders, muzzle loading Adams volunteer .577, Eight or so Stevens favourites, about 200 in all ranging form Derringer to Oerlikon and an original 1921 TSMG serial number about 100 away from one Dillinger had.

Can`t be the same type of round. As far as I know they banned the freaking things cause they did too much tearing up of the carcass. Got to be too hard for the doctors to repair the mess. Tiny spinning razor blades do the trick.

Actually forreal, the DIDN'T ban them. Do a quick google search. The "Black Talon" round was never banned.

Instead, due to the media hype, etc. Winchester voluntarily removed if from the market. They waited a few months and released it under a new name, minus the distinctive black coating.

Their remaining stock of Black Talons was put in new boxes labeled as "Ranger Talons" and marked "For Law Enforcement Use Only". Yet no law, federal or state, that I know of ever banned the manufacture or sale of the Black Talon round.

May 2011 Edition of the American Rifleman
Page #63

A review on the Taurus PT740 Slim. .40 S&W cal.

It is a short article where the magazine names it the handgun of the year.

I picked up one of these about 6 months ago. My reasoning was the caliber, size and price.

Have been very happy with it. One of the plus parts is the manual safety that you will not see on Glocks or a lot of the other plastic handguns. This pistol is reliable. I have never had a failure to fire, cycle etc. in about 400 rounds. It is easy to conceal, light and slim.

I paid a reasonable $370 and that is while it was a new model and hard to find.

A good choice for a larger caliber CCW.

2dapoint,

I tell anyone, family and friends, that a good CCW gun is one you have confidence in. Not only in your ability to use it, but in its reliability, and your ability to carry it safely.

I've carried an plastic pistol (Glock 23) since 1998, both on duty and off, and not once have I had a malfunction, or an issue with not having a manual safety.

When I was working I shot a box of shells a week, just to keep the edge. Now I might shoot once a month, for the same reason. Back then the dept. supplied the ammo so cost wasn't a concern like it is now. LOL

I've carried my Glock in a duty holster, a shoulder rig, a Uncle Mikes inside the pants holster, a Fobus paddle back (great holsters BTW) and even dropped it in a coat pocket from time to time. Always loaded, even the chamber, and never had a accidental discharge. I know others who've done the same.

In my opinion you won't find a out of the box self defense gun that's any more reliable than the Glock. It's easy to clean, shoots great, and the .40 round is big enough to stop just about anything or anyone.

However, if you don't trust them, you're better off with something you do trust. Why?

If you don't trust it you won't carry it. It's as simple as that.

DC our duty weapons went from .38spl to Colt 1911 type .45s. Off duty I carried a Walther PPKS the most and never used the safety on that because of it's double action features being so similiar to a revolver.

I had a Glock 27 and was not impressed with it. Another friend had one too and he gave it up. Though we both have 26s and are very happy with them.

In search of a good CCW in .40 I bought a Walther PPS and it shot great when it worked. However after a couple trips back to S&W, who markets them now, I gave up on being able to trust it and had them send me a S&W M&P 40C which is accurate and dependable but too big for me to conceal in hot weather.

My reasoning for mentioning the manual safety on the Taurus was because of the lack of that type safety on several of my other DAO guns and the somewhat light trigger pull of them. I considered the Kahr PM40 but you know how expensive they are. Also my PM9 needed a trip back to the factory to become dependable.

Didn't mean to make the PT740 sound like more than it is. Just thought others who read the review in the NRA mag and were interested should know how dependable a low priced Taurus has worked so far for me.

No arguments here. And I wasn't saying that one is more dependable than the other.

I have a Ruger P85 that I love as far as reliability. It doesn't matter what ammo I shoot, it always goes bang and cycles fine.

I had a S&W 5904 that would not cycle some cheaper ammos and reloads. I also had more malfunctions on the range with that gun than any gun I've ever shot. A trip to the range with it wasn't complete without a stovepipe or similar malfunction.

My brother recently purchased a HiPoint 9mm. New out of the box it shot great, but after we put about a hundred rounds through it we started experiencing malfunctions. It wouldn't load the round, or would stovepipe.

After a very careful cleaning we got another 50 rounds through it before it started acting up again. He called HiPoint and they paid to have the gun shipped back to them, fixed it, and returned it free of charge. They even threw in two extra ten round mags for it, "for his time and trouble" according to the letter.

We've fired hundreds of rounds through it and not had a single malfunction since.

I'd carry the HiPoint (now) or the Ruger (despite it's bulk and weight) any day of the long gone 5904.

My point was this, and not really addressed to you but to other readers in general. If you are going to carry, buy something you trust to do the job. Because if you don't trust it you might as well leave it at home.

I agree...for personal defense. As for home defense though, I have a Mossberg 12 gauge. 18 1/2" bbl and 8 rounds. Anything more than that, then I'm gonna need some help.

I've got a Rossi-Overland Coach side by side that'll clear a hallway...but it's only a 2-shooter...
