depotguy's blog post - The power of memory

Friday, February 1, 2008, 8:48:05 PM

If you are really old (like me) you may remember the song "ode to billie joe"

Here's the memory part. My mom took me to the movie (based on the song) when I was 14. The movies "shocking" story line was about a young man who has drunken sex with another man and kills himself.

Obviously my mom knew more about me than I did. This was the only movie we ever saw together (in a theater). So what was she trying to tell me? NOT to have drunken sex and kill myself.

I guess I'm writing about this because i only remembered it after hearing the song last week. I haven't thought about this for 30 years. It must of really bothered me

Google is a wonderful thing... the movie came years later, after the song. I do remember hearing the song as a child, even though it predates me. It's a beautiful, if haunting, song.

I'm wondering what brought this about, though... all ok?

Wow....I know that song but didn't know about the movie. I don't know what brought the memory back to life but I hope it goes away again....

1st off... you're not old cause i'm right behind you and i'm not!! as for your mom ..coming from a mom (me)of a son i believe to be gay...it would seem that she was opening a window if you wanted to take it...if she in anyway thought ill of the situation she would have never taken you... she was probably curious just as i am...she probably wanted to show you that she was alright with it...she probably thought it was a good opportunity... 30 years ago i could see myself doing that (if i WAS old enough)... moms perspective..
and now you have a blog in my head...
