seshat's blog post - Such a softie

Tuesday, April 23, 2013, 7:57:52 PM
I think that everybody knows the horrors of the second world war and the holocaust by now. But it's another thing to see personal testimonies.

I just finished watching a documentary about two good Belgian friends. One was the son and brother of adamant nazi enthusiasts, who participated in the deportation etc. of Belgian Jews almost until the end of the war (changing sides in the end). The other one was a Jew who escaped from a deportation train, but lost his mother and sister.

To see these two men sharing their stories, sharing their pain and even visiting an old concentration camp together... To see this unlikely friendship... Powerful stuff, the tears in their eyes were mirrored by tears in my eyes. I'm such a softie smile

I think everyone is a softie when it comes to atrocities. My first encounter with a Jewish Holocaust Prisoner was when I was 13 and saw a woman on the bus with the numbers tattoo. I asked my dad about it. The next day he handed me the book The Third Reich. I will never forget it

A truly awful period in history that must never be forgotten . Being Jewish I grew up hearing about the holocaust and having seen a family tree with the victims named on it is gut wrenching x
