In Britain and other countries,Remembrance day is held on the nearest Sunday to the anniversary of the armistice in WW1 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month)In Britain, we wear a poppy as a symbol of our gratitude to our servicemen & women who lost their lives in the defence of our freedom and way of life. If you're not familiar with this practice, and have seen loonie Brits on TV with a big red poppy on their lapel, this is the reason.Needless to say, this gratitude is also extended to our allies, and the remembrance is for ALL fallen heroes, no matter what their nationality or beliefs. The following is but one stanza from a WW1 poem,'For The Fallen' which is read at most remembrance services in most countries.I won't bore you with the whole poem, but you can Google it if you want to read it all It always brings a tear to my eye They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn: At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them Thank you for taking the trouble to read this |
