Been meaning to do this for a bit, with it being Men's Mental Health Awareness Month...as many of you know, I deal with anxiety/depression; and also that music is a big part of who I am. That being said, I wanted to share a band that has gotten me through a lot the last few years. The vocalist/songwriter is actually a licensed therapist, and their songs focus on mental health issues. I'm hoping by sharing that it might help someone else (that means you too, ladies) that might be struggling. The band is called Citizen Soldier, and although I love all their music, this is probably my favorite song from them (and the one I identify with the closest)...

It is a most crazy world we live in. One almost has to be a psychopath to always feel at ease in the sick societies of today. People with true nice qualities always getting pushed aside. But I think that folks who may appear the weakest, are in fact very strong and resilient. Because they refuse to give in, refuse to give up their empathy, kindness and compassion. Hang in there. I appreciate you a lot here, you are a great guy to know.

Hey MW,

Thanks for doing your bit to highlight mental health issues and for being so open to acknowledge your own struggles. Like you I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression at times, usually triggered by traumatic events such as the suicide of one of my best friends (coincidentally due to mental health issues). Although I’m ok at the moment, thankfully. And my own struggles are nothing compared to what some people go through.

It’s interesting to note the link with music. Like you I also love music and have a very varied taste. But to this day there’s still one song (I won’t say which) that I cannot listen to. I love the song but it was played at the funeral of somebody close to me and now the link cannot be broken. If that song comes on I pretty much start crying immediately and have to leave the room. Weird eh?

I’d not heard of the band that you highlighted. I’ll have to check them out some more.

Anyway, although we don’t really know each other, I stand with you on these mental health issues my frieNNd.

I feel your pain and wish you the best in dealing with your struggles. It’s definitely not easy to go though
