coloeagle's blog post - trek or not to trek...

suppose to head to the high-country saturday morn.. 10 mile backpack trek with my boy scout troop, spend the night, then limp back in sunday morning.. don't know about that now.. snow fell on the backside of the peak last night, temps last night reported -3 and me thinks these little fellas aren't ready for it. so what do we do.. ?it would be a good experience for them, and with four adults, I know we have enough experience to make it happen for them, and for a majoirity of the boys, this would make their year complete, and give them braggin rights but.... don't know how their parents expect them to be able to get along with a cheap-ass pack, a flimsy sleeping bag, and tennis shoes? gotta hand it to those guys tho.. they are willing to tackle just about anythang and the parents don't support them.. the parents want their kids to "experience" the outdoors, learn to be self-sufficient, become the leaders of tomorrow, and yet when it comes time to provide them the proper tools, can come up with a zillion excuses.. what are THEY teaching there? anyway, leaning towards making this trip a one-day hike. gots to make a few phone calls, check the maps, look over trails and hopefully decide by 3 this afternoon.. then make the phone calls, and double up with the emails for any changes. and no matter what trek we do, make a gentle reminder, winter in the rockies.. make sure you have the right gear... |
