I'm trying to learn stuff about coins, but my attention span is kinda shor.... SQUIRREL! Huh? Oh yeah. That. Anyway, back on topic. Boobies. How does this tie in? Well, I'll tell ya! Better sit down. It's FASCINATING! (not really) Yeah, so, in 1916 the Standing Liberty quarters were minted topless, complete with visible nipples. This caused great upset throughout the land. My guess is that men were so focused on running their fingers over the coin nipples that all other thought fled from their minds, hence the Great Depression a few years later. ANYWAY, they (the coins, not the pervs) were still being minted the same way in 1917, but partway through the year, they retooled the die and put a shirt or a scarf or Hawaiian lei or something on the broad and covered up her nippleage. They also added three stars on the reverse under the eagle. Apparently the three stars are a big deal cuz oftentimes the nipples are worn clean off the obverse (surprising, right?) and it's hard to tell a Type 1 (nipples) from a Type 2 (shirt) and ya gotta check for the stars to determine which type it is. You're welcome! HP |
