Apostrophes Replace Missing Letters
An apostrophe can be used to show that a letter (or letters) is missing from a word.

Using an apostrophe to replace a missing letter is not common in formal writing, where you'd expect all words to be written in full. (Using an apostrophe to replace a letter is extremely common, but it is generally reserved for informal writing. It is used to reflect how people speak.)

Examples:

The weather's bad.
(Written in full: The weather is bad. In this example, the apostrophe replaces the letter i.)

Don't think about it.
(In full: Do not)

Only Use Apostrophes to Replace Letters in Standard Contractions
When an apostrophe replaces a letter, a new word is formed (most often, but not always, from two words originally). The new word is called a contraction.

You cannot invent your own contractions.

The verb are is a present tense form of the verb "to be." The adjective our is the possessive form of "we."

Examples:

Then/Than
Then relates to time.
Than is used to introduce a comparison.

that-a 'non' person. (Don't dehumanize 'who'.)

Their, they're & there.
(They+Are=They're.)
Their-possessive
There- a place
its – for possession
it’s – for “it is” or “it has”

To, Two & Too.
"You walk to a store that is too far away, the distance is two hundred miles. " See the differences?

Yore, Your, You're.
Yore (In ancient times) "a great empire in days of yore."
Your- possessive
(You+Are=You're.)

Weather, Whether.

There is often confusion over the words alot, a lot and allot.
Alot
The word alot does not exist. Period. It is often mistakenly written instead of a lot.

I know alot about precious stones.

A lot

The term a lot is the opposite of a little. As a noun, lot means a large extent, a large amount, or a large number. As an adverb, lot means to a great extent or to a great degree. It nearly always appears in the form a lot.

Mark has a lot of toys.
(Lot is a noun in this example.)

(Lot is an adverb in this example.)
Allot
The verb to allot means to give out, to apportion, to divide, or to distribute. (Other forms of the verb are allots, allotted, and allotting.)

I will allot a radio to each group.

You need to allot each syndicate sufficient time to question the presenter.

You don't list items 'for sell'. It's 'for sale'.

(You lose a game. Loose refers to something that needs to be tightened.)

You're never 'doing good'. You 'can' be 'doing well'.

Yes, I moved to Ohio
I was seeing someone. That pretty much ended and we've become friends instead of "lovers". I'm not sure how things are going...so I'll just say I don't know if I have found the 'one ' for me as of yet. I don't truly know if that exists. Apparently not....I have been wrapped up in my personal life, so I haven't really had much time to update here.
My Step-Mom passed away last month (May of 2006) That has left me devestated. She was much more influential in my life than my own mother, who is still alive and well.
I promise to come back within the next few days and update again withh more details, and maybe a few pics. If not nudes. At least updated 'me' pics =)

There are so many more people in this world that are facing devestating circumstances...I'm going to just stop focusing on the negative things in life. I am only going to be positive from now on...

This is not meant in a negative way at all. I get a LOT of assorted ANAL comments...This is an FYI for everyone, Not my thing people. I had a horrific experience when I was a teenager. I'm not going to get into personal details, I'll just leave it at this. I was left scarred in more ways than one... emotionally & physically it was a very terrible experience.

I'm a single woman now, If I were to ever be in an actual loving relationship, who knows...My feelings might have the chance to change....for now. it's a very uncomfortable subject for me.
