On mainstream social media dating sites (to actually date), not getting anywhere. Is there something wrong with "Hi, how are you?" as an icebreaker?

I've found talking about yourself, right after the hello. If you've got a heart felt story of your life, some kind of travesty that's happened, nothing that makes you uncomfortable to talk afoot with a totally stranger.. Come on lines get ya nowhere really fast. Keep at it
