sammiealice's blog post - pearl harbor day

i was downtown this afternoon and i saw a gentlemen zipping towards me on one of those motorized chairs. as he got close to me, i realized that he was in a military uniform—an army sergeant—which i thought was just a little weird.—and it got weirder when i realize that it was a WW II uniform. then i was remembered that it was pearl harbor day today and he was most likely wearing the uniform to remind us of that.

he was really zipping along and by the time i realize what he was doing, it was across the street and gone. i wanted to run after him and shake his hand and give him a kiss and thank him for what he had done for us---but he was just zipping along and if figured that i would see him on the street later but did not.

our service men and women have protected us for 350 years and we just don’t give them the thanks that they deserve. we forget that they have fought so that we can enjoy the fruits of peace. so, to all our service men and women who have served their nation with honor and dignity, i say thank you so very much and i appreciate what you have done.

this is but a small statement of appreciate for a group of our citizens who have given their last full measure for us.

My dad was a WWII veteran, served under Patton in north Africa and Italy. He was awarded the Legion of Merit (I still have it). But all his life, he never really wanted to talk about why he received the medal -- he would just change the subject. We should be humbled that these soldiers never had any elevated regard for themselves as "heroes." They were just ordinary soldiers answering the call to duty and service. We owe them all a debt that we can never repay.
