Today the family gathered at the cemetery to toast The Old Man who would have turned 80 yesterday. I was the first one there and sat in the shade of a tree up on a hill with a cooler of beer waiting for the others. As I looked out at the blue sky and white clouds, a strong, hot breeze was blowing and carried the music of a Mexican gathering from across the way.It may have even been a funeral mass but the song was The Drifters "Stand By Me". As I sat there drinking a cold Bud ,"smoke got in my eyes" and I teared up as thoughts of my Dad flashed before me. He has been gone for over 21 years. He just got the news he would be a Grandpa for the first time shortly before he had his paralyzing stroke 8 months before his retirement. A lifelong Chicagoan, teamster,Cubfan/Budman,Korean War Air Force Vet,mechanic, fisherman and Ford man.We didn't always see eye to eye but I loved him. I think of him everyday. This Bud's for you,WRZ.
Following is one of his favorite songs......
